SOMA is one of my favorites from the past few years. It's by the same team as Amnesia: The Dark Descent (which is also worth a look if you haven't tried it). SOMA has atmosphere and tension, but most of the horror is in its philosophical themes.

That game looks interesting tapeworm, I haven’t played it though. I’m intrigued wondering what kind of philosophical ideas could truly give rise to fear. beanstalk, could you please provide a bit more detail about that game you linked to? It's just that I seldom download something blind, and I couldn't find any info on it by googling.

nice, i like horror games a lot (even though most of them are pretty bad), here are some that caught my interest:
Eversion- pretty much the most basic "scare" concept you can have, its a platformer where you can "change dimensions" to progress the levels and as you go the game forces you to go into dimensions that are darker and darker, i like it because it geniuenly looks like some guy's first full game maker project so it's pretty believable if you show it to someoen for the first time. also has a few "shockers" here and there that are pretty good at setting the mood (no jumpscares though).
kanoguti games- they also work as basic concepts of what can be scary and whatnot. go rotten never really intrigued me (its just a cool program imo), Walking is amazing though.
Pathologic- russian story-driven rpg, i didnt get past the first day but i quite liked the atmosphere and soundtrack
The White Chamber- awesome freeware point n click, has an anime aesthetic. you wake up in a coffin and dont know whats going on, it turns out youre on a ship in space and then spooky shit starts happening.
LSD Dream Emulator- i think everyone knows about this but it can be quite spooky at times, i got really freaked out once by that TV that can appear in the yellow room
Hotel 626- pretty cool flash game, has a bit of a jumpscare at the start but its been pretty much built up for one. you walk around a hotel or something and spooky shit happens. has really cool 4th wall breaks like calling your phone if youre in USA or having you talk in the mic etc.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream- awesome classic point n click, the game itself is not so scary but its very depressing and has a horrible premise- a sentient supercomputer named AM has wiped out humanity and captured 5 people, which he tortured for over 100 years. you play as each one of them and explore what is left of the earth.
Demonophobia- cool freeware japanese(?) guro game. has a lot of pretty cool brutal death scenes and its very difficult.
Ib- well made japanese rpgmaker game. you are a little girl in a museum and you get lost. soon, you cant find anyone and the paintings come to life. pretty well made.
Home- a short, pretty satisfying story-driven game. costs like 1 buck for about 1 hour of gameplay. no real spooks but pretty strange atmosphere.
sanitarium- another classic point n click, a guy wakes up in a sanitarium and doesnt remember anything. stuff is off and soon, he find himself in some kind of strange village. i wont spoil much. the game is pretty well made but throws too much stuff at you i guess- its like the devs wanted to put ALL of their ideas in the same game and it can be very hit and miss. has an awesome soundtrack at least.
Lone Survivor- probably the best horror game i know, it has an EXCELLENT soundtrack and atmosphere and overall just a feeling of complete melancholy. you are a survivor of a sort of zombie apocalypse, but its one unlike in most movies. the zombies are almost unkillable and there are no other survivors you know of. so you just stay in your room until one day, you run out of supplies and have to face the outside. its amazing at making you question what you just saw, theres many different passages that feel more like nightmares than real things, its coated in this feeling of helplesness- materials are scarce and everyone you eventually come across seems somewhat insane. its got a lot of story symbolism and stuff and bla bla the game is fucking awesome and scary and shit and the last boss together with it's build up was the spookiest shit ive ever experienced so check it out! my only downside with it is that the ending is a bit of a downer- its completely anti-climatic, the game just sort of "ends". but i think its worth the experience.

That game looks interesting tapeworm, I haven’t played it though. I’m intrigued wondering what kind of philosophical ideas could truly give rise to fear. It's difficult to explain without saying too much about the game's plot. The protagonist must deal with questions about his identity in the face of humanity's extinction. There are several different types of attempts to preserve the species using technology, but the game is relentless in its bleakness. In that it reminded me of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, even though the stories are quite different.

I like the eerieness of older generation 3D games in general like that King's Quest that saint timmy mentioned in another thread looks pretty creepy. Alone in the Dark the old one, I remember playing it with my friend and the bird thing breaking through the window was pretty creepy

beanstalk, could you please provide a bit more detail about that game you linked to? It's just that I seldom download something blind, and I couldn't find any info on it by googling. It's a very bleak and slightly surreal adventure platformer by biggt, who also made the brilliant La La Land series. It's been described as a genocidal Seiklus and I think that's about the best description you could find for it. Probably the most brilliant and successful attempt at an horror game, as far as I'm concerned, would be The Dark Eye. It's based on a few short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and lets you experience the events through the eyes of both the murderer and the victim. Its art style is also stunning, and perfectly fitting.

They may be too well-known to be worth mentioning, the Silent Hill games have some of the best atmosphere I know of. The fourth game especially got to me, but that might be because it was the first one I played.
Another good one is Eternal Darkness on the GameCube.
A recent game that I liked is Layers of Fear. It's clearly patterned after PT, though I never got a chance to try the PT demo. (It was especially disappointing to learn after that game was canceled that Junji Ito was to be involved.)

Yeah I recently played silent hill 4. It definitely had some good bits, like I really liked how your apartment became more haunted, I sortof wish they did more with that , but yeah i still think the first one is scarier. SH1 is probably one of the only games that’s ever given me a proper scare(the sewer bit was very creepy), but even so, that was a long time ago when it did. You know a great horror game? Clocktower

This kinda counts as a jumpcare game, but I really like the demonic vivid texture effects and the disturbing story-driven atmosphere. Death by Specimen 6 is my favorite.

Yume Nikki is really good (and free). It's an exploration game of surreal imagery. I get the impression that a lot of you already know about it though.
Somebody else in this thread mentioned clocktower and I second this, but also play the spiritual successor Haunting Ground if you can get your hands on it.

Iv'e played clock tower 1,2 and 3. Personally I think the first is the best. 2 is sorta interesting because it's 3d, but it's also worse (it has terrible voice acting and pacing), the third one is unplayable. Clock tower 1 appears to have been based on the Dario agento movie creepers, has any else noticed the similarities between the two? Clock tower, it's not really that scary I mean.
