Has anyone heard of an anime about machines that come out of the ocean and then possess people by sending tubes into them. Some guy was telling me about this show but I forget the title, gor maybe, something about dead fish perhaps?

he probably meant Gyo, I think the manga is way better though That's the one. Does the manga ever reveal the true nature of the death stench?

I thought perhaps it was a metaphor for technology. First it poisons the oceans and nature with the runoff from industry (the dead fish), then it enslaves people (ever notice how 90 percent of people on a train are glued to their smart devices?)the truth of the second point seems blaringly obvious. I think it was a war experiment together with the nature itself going crazy and reproducing those leg machines as an organism... sick, sick... I can recommend Kazuo Umezu's works (also known simply as Umezz) - he was among pioneers of horror manga, and Junji Itoh apparently was heavily inspired by his creations. Umezz's classic works belong to the 60s - early 70s (Itoh is a bit later, 80s-90s), and are generally less scary art-wise, however the stories are often elaborate and thoughtful. His works aren't very well known, and it may be a bit hard to find them. I've read "Cat Eyed Boy" and "Orochi", and in general I find these works quite notable. Cat Eyed Boy was made into an anime (in an unusual "still cartoon" style), it's very rare, I'd like to watch it one day... the opening song by Horie Mitsuko is great. I'd love to read those but Im not in much of a position to buy anything these days, maybe someday.
