I think I tried to use AGS and it wouldn't work on linux because it uses .net stuff, but for other people it's probably good

setting up a system right now for making first person adventure games in godot that can also have other characters that talk and pose a bit like a visual novel I guess. it's quite easy to write code for it though, you just have to put a function into a script for the room which has the same name as the thing you click to activate it
