the first thing I might make is a character that can move around a level in some way. but usually I start with drawing the level first, and then the characters come after that. I improvise everything a lot, but I do a lot of drawings and loose planning in sketch books too. usually I start making a game and then start planning after that, because I can't think of anything until i've thrown something together.
I also need something to copy when I make a game to get me immersed in what i'm doing, otherwise I'm not really sure what to do, specifically when starting the game

I write a list of all the good ideas I can come up with, then prioritize them, then go through them systematically, that is after doing the main character/game mechanics. In the past I would try alot of experimentation without much planning, and that ended up with alot of unplayable games which never got published. I still experiment though.

actually another way I start sometimes is by listening to some music I like and imagine a game for it, or I start making sounds and imagine the game they could go in

honestly its totally random for me, i just enjoy the ride
i mean good ideas can come from anything, the best stuff i ever made was just by pure chance where i had no idea what i was doing the whole time or i got a clue on what to make from something completely unrelated
if id have any tips for makin games, it would be to 1. do stuff QUICKLY (the longer it stretches, the more i usually get bored with it) and 2. enjoy the ride (just dont hesitate to do anything possible)

if im at home i just think of ideas mid developing something, or if im not at home, i think of what to do for a game and write it in notes on iphone
for example, i thought of the new names for my cheat codes on my latest Guitar Hero mod and wrote it in notes while i wasn't home
