Siddal
www.obscure.org/~dew/Siddal/Siddal.html
My absolute number one ethereal band. Translucent. Magical. Not of this world. Modest yet astonishing at the same time. Clearly this music is one of a kind. Siddal is all the proof you will ever need that beauty exists in this universe.
Favourites: everything. Out of everything:

Australian electronic band with David Thrussell as its most permanent, prevalent and impertinent bastard member, one of the very few outspoken, hard-hitting lyricists pointing out and truly criticizing the course our dear modern society has taken. Blunt, cynical, jarring - but at the same time very passionate about things he's singing about, and with a wonderful sense of black humour. It's not the kind of music that states "yeah, the world is shit, so fuck it and let's just swallow it and dance dance dance". It's more like "the world is shit, and here's why - and it's worth talking and singing about, worth asking the questions about the kind of life you're living, worth laughing at your oppressors and dare to challenge the views they impose on you". Amazingly, he's still on the scene since the 90s, and there's a new album due this April. Snog forever!
I'm just a hard-working corporate slave My mind should hate what my body does crave I'm just a humble corporate slave Dropping myself into a corporate grave
The winds will blow The profits go down I'm out of work My daughter will drown There's stress in my heart Blood on your hands Pushing up the hill against the company man
It's raining in corporate heaven All the coffers are a-singing

Stoa is more about neoclassical music, but still... They only released 4 albums, and it doesn't look like they are going to resume the activity (but who knows, I truly wish they did). Most tracks are instrumental, and are of calm, sad or solemn mood. Very pleasant to the ears.

Sunday Munich

Dark trip-hop collective, they only released two albums. "Music for the shitty days" might be the accurate description of this band. Sinking, somewhat weirdly swirling vocals and slow beat. Pretty depressing lyrics, as far as I was able to understand. The second album, "Vinculum", has a few songs in a different style. But it's mostly good, gloomy, mind-numbing trip hop.

The Frozen Autumn
www.discogs.com/artist/94685-The-Frozen-Autumn
Italian coldwave. They are still releasing albums on Metropolis Records label, during the early days there was only one vocalist, then Froxeanne joined the band, and they are still performing together to this day. Not sure how many members there are exactly in Frozen Autumn, but looks like the core of it is that duet. Anyway, the music is mostly synths with good, rich male and female vocals and interesting romantic and introspective texts. It's also one of those bands that sound even better live, rather than on their studio recordings.

Love Club
www.discogs.com/artist/129005-Love-Club-4
Again, only one album, named "Lime Twigs And Treachery", with a beautiful orange-red cover. Music lovers compare this lady-fronted band with Sunshine Blind, and yes, there is a similar feeling about Love Club's songs. Powerful performance (people who've seen them live said it was an enchanting experience), very expressive lyrics and overall good sound. A shame there isn't more stuff by them.

Alison's Halo

An obscure, but really great shoegaze band. They didn't release much, but it seems lately they started trying to make their music known! I listened to Eyedazzler 1992-1996, and it's just amazing... Pure sunlight in your head.

Claire Voyant
www.darkcircles.net/interviews/cv.html clairevoyant.com/ (music on the main page)
Probably the most melancholic band on the list, ethereal and slow-tempo electronic band from California. I adore Victoria Lloyd's voice, to me it sounds just perfect. It's otherworldly, powerful and fleeting. All their albums are great, if you have the right mood for them. The songs are rather sad and trippy, some of them hold terrible secrets I think, but you can't get the exact meaning out of the lyrics alone, the text seems to shift along with the music, carrying you away somewhere far in a hallucinatory vision. A few tracks are clearly exploring mystical and religious themes, which I'm not so fond of at times, but thankfully they leave enough room here to draw your own interpretations. Victoria did a few songs in a different style, mostly on the remixes album "Time Again" (featuring a really weird Illuminati statue reference on the album's cover), and also in "HMB - Great Industrial Love Affairs" and "Mono Chrome - Collapse and Sever". Still, the original Claire Voyant albums are the best in my opinion. I wish to see more new albums in the future, "Lustre" was so good...
Favourites:
Her Wanderlust Love the Giver Eventide Blinking Tears Pieces Twenty-four Years (this track was featured on "Gypsy 83" movie, I like this one most!) He Is Here Lustre Shine Lost Flicker Broadcast Serenade Stay (Glitch Remix by Claire Voyant, original song by Hungry Lucy) - listen Iolite (Trancelite Mix By Francis A. Preve) Majesty (Premonition Mix By Assemblage 23) Everafter (Singing In The Rain Mix By J. Stephen Foster)

All My Faith Lost...
www.discogs.com/artist/230446-All-My-Faith-Lost
Italian ethereal/experimental band. Calm and sleepy music, with occasional spoken poetry, which kind of ruins the mood for me. I need to listen to them more, haven't really explored their music in depth yet.
Favourites: No particular preference here, but I can recommend "The Hours" (album).

Autumn's Grey Solace

Very interesting dreampop/ethereal band, still active at the time of writing. Almost no lyrics, just hypnotic chanting and guitars, in lots of different patterns. Kind of like lovesliescrushing but more melodic, and sometimes more dark too.

Black Tape for a Blue Girl
blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.com/
Sam Rosenthal's band, the origin of the Projekt Records label. Experimental darkwave, with some etherealness. Again, I haven't listened much - but I seem to like the earlier works more, the later albums reek of shock value in my opinion, there's too much emphasis on scandalous album covers and BDSM-ish or religious lyrics. Not exactly my cup of tea, but as I said, I like the earlier stuff, which is basically quiet, sad electronic music with occasional female vocals.
Favourites:
Try old albums like "The Rope".
