Hi forums, um today I tried to replace the cmos battery in my main pc, because I was getting a message at bootup, low voltage in cmos, or something like that and I was worried the timestamp would start fucking up (it’s been over 5 years since the battery was changed) anyway I changed the battery then when the pc was booted it would give me a message "can't find bios", I changed the bios order under system config, and now I just get the message “error loading operating system” on a black background, nothing happens after that. Anyway I don’t know what to do and I feel pretty shit about the whole situation, I have tons on work on the pc (including sunfish 2) and my new game was progressing well, I do not want to lose that stuff, infact it would be rather devestating to me if that happened. Any ideas what to do? ?

i thought that you didn't even need a CMOS battery, the only thing that would happen if you didn't have one is that it wouldn't count time while your computer is off and your changes to the BIOS setup would not be saved on the rom

That was scary! Good to hear that you won the battle! Technology can betray us at any moment, I always try to be ready for it, but every time bad stuff does happen, it costs a lot of nerves and data... My old PC's CMOS died several years ago, I heard that it can be "recharged" by leaving the computer on for a full day without advancing from CMOS error screen. I never tried it myself, and I use old computer rarely anyway, but now I have to reset the time with every session. Wrong time fucks up the browser, it refuses to display 90% of sites due to the temporal difference... Scary? Friggen oath it was! I was starting to think "shit I’m going to have to take up painting or something" but yeah.. you can try and pre-empt pc problems (ie backing work up regularly) but I tend to get complacent after a while, it just gets to be a real hassle. That’s certainly a weird trick of leaving the pc on the error screen and I honestly can't understand why that would work, but hell maybe, I’ve heard of stranger things. i thought that you didn't even need a CMOS battery, the only thing that would happen if you didn't have one is that it wouldn't count time while your computer is off and your changes to the BIOS setup would not be saved on the rom Well as macabre pointed out, you can still boot, however documents wont get time stamped properly and certain things such as specific webpages will not work if there are temporal disturbances.
