Hey, lets talk about any games that you've been playing recently. Are they any good? Recently iv'e been playing zelda 2 on a nes emulator. This game really sucks, it's quite repetitive and boring. Some of the music in the castle segments is alright though. Currently Im stuck at a bit where you have to find a lost mirror in the swamp. I think i'll give up because i'd rather make a new game than do this. Has anyone been playing anything else?

I was playing Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within, but I had to format my computer and lost my save file in the process. It was really good so I may start all over again.

I have been playing chronotrigger although the Gameplay is really tedious the storyline is cool and the music and character designs can be quite good. I also thought the time travel sounded stupid, but because the time travel is to different times in the same little world is actually quite cool I think.

I don't play games as often as I'd like to anymore. Too busy with stuff and not motivated enough to play anymore I guess. I recently finished Enderal and now I'm thinking about finally finishing Dragon's Dogma, probably in like 5 months from now because I'm so lazy. Every big AAA game feels the same to me and I have lost most of my excitement to play such games. Don't really know why. Man i don't blame you. What does triple aaa game even mean anyway? I think most mainstream games are boring because ultimately they reflect the people who work on them, and the mindset of said people, and to me I know that these are freaking dull people. For one thing most big games are made by a team, but not a team based around true comradery but rather they are employed, just working shifts for money, so their primary motivation is really paying their bills not making art. This fundamentally shifts any game work in the same direction, a very lame direction. Not to mention the workers on a triple Aids title will probably not have much creative input anyway, as they'll be taking orders in some sort of idiot hierarchy. Also in my view, the folks who choose to work in companies have taken the easiest way to get by. It's a sheepish mentality and I don't see how such people can be innovators or mavericks. Maybe It's possible for them to be, but I think it's unlikely. I have been playing chronotrigger although the Gameplay is really tedious the storyline is cool and the music and character designs can be quite good. I also thought the time travel sounded stupid, but because the time travel is to different times in the same little world is actually quite cool I think. Oh yeah, chrono trigger is pretty tedious i think. I remember it took me all day to finish it, even with cheats. It would be a better game if it wasn't so grindy, the musics good and its got an ok plot. Just take out all the battles and I'd like it about 90% more.

I'm playing GTA san andreas at the moment. I've been thinking about how dense it feels, it has this great big feeling like its full of lots of stuff and feels alive, which for some reason GTA 5 did not for me. I've also been thinking about why I like san andreas and revenge of the sunfish, they both mean a lot to me in a similar way even though they are very different, both very dense and feel large enough to get lost in. I think it's really important to make a game that you can get lost in (this is obvious I guess), whether that comes from not understanding everything or literally feeling isolated in a location. well maybe it's not obvious for AAA developers, because these games don't seem to have this sense of immersion today

I think that smallish games can seem larger than they are, if they are designed well, that is have the sort of immersion your talking about without actually being as big as ymme2ki or something like that. Hunter on the amiga is like the first GTA game in alot of ways, it has a really calm vibe about it and it's also pretty big. You should have a look at it Jacques, maybe just a youtube vid if you can't get it to run. Also check out this map of the c64 game called "hopeless" whoa man!it's pretty insane. I love looking at game maps like this.

also one reason i think older 3d games feel bigger than new ones is because of the short draw-distance. cos if you can see the entire world from any one place in the game, like in modern open world games, it feels small. this is one reason why i think technical limitations can be a good thing
that game looks amazing considering how old it must be
ok the map just loaded for me, it looks really cool like a carpet pattern

imo the reason why old open world games were much more immersive was that they were more sparing about stuff they gave you. its kinda like the modern internet, how you can get almost everything by a few clicks and it doesnt feel special. maybe someone here would like the game "Tail of the Sun", i didnt play it, but it looks quite interesting.

Thanks for sharing Saint. I've finished Kings Field 1(not the Japanese pc version though), 2 and Shadow tower. I really like the atmosphere of those games, and i was thinking of possibly making a game like them at some point. It's cool how the walls contain alot of secrets. kings field one definitely has the most dynamic map design in the series, but also super spartan environments. I really liked the music in 2 and just the overall low poly aesthetic. They are freaking hard to play though!!! I put the game in fast forward on the emulator and spammed the seeking magic. Shadow tower is probably the worst, because A. your weapons keep breaking, B. the map design is boring and linear and C. there's no music in the whole game (bar the title screen/ending.
Top bannana is pretty mental. When the screen starts simultaneously moving and inverting the colors, thats certain to give someone a seizure.

I tried to play a corrupted ver of OOT with bizhawk, but instead I corrupted my chrome browser that was under it. Everything turned into a bunch of flickering patterns. It was CRAZY. ( I'm gonna break my computer someday) IDK how other people corrupt that game. I spent hours of it constantly crashing and the only effects I get are graphical. And maybe that one time the deku baba turned into a morphing mess of polygons.
