Should you be able to take control of every character in the game at will? What are the disadvantages of such an approach?

Man how can you have too many playable characters? not possible. it's more difficult to implement in reality, thats why so few games do this, simply because the programmers are lazy/realize it's very impractical to implement. still super cool. I love the arcade game Phantasm, you are a ghost and you can posses enemies.

Actually I wasn't thinking in the context of a fighting game at all, so you guys aren't really helping. Definitely story heavy, and more of a platformer with adventure elements. Anyway I've found that 73 characters is a good number, optimal even.

it would be hard to make a story shown differently from the perspective of so many characters but I dont think it would be a bad thing

simple solution for a fighting game: Mugen does it have 73 characters exactly? probably, the game is customizable after all and i think there are older forums that have characters that you can add to the game
