the most onlining I do is this forum and youtube and sharing on twitter, and contacting people through facebook. I like to make sure i have some distance from the internets so I dont get upset paranoid about something. I don't have an iphone because I'd rather not have access to the social medias out of the house, well, you need the map function sometimes, but otherwise I'm not too interested. what about you guys

i think like a few months ago we all agreed that social networks are fucking lame unless its cool forumz like this.
i only use facebook and skype for work/school purposes and to talk to people who dont use anything else, youtube acc that i only use to check my few subscriptions and most of my activity is on this forum, i just think its healthier to use an outlet where everyone around "gets" what you mean.
dont have much else to say rly

I have facebook because I use it to talk to my girlfriend and stuff, but it's also quite addictive and I often waste a lot of time looking at pure rubbish. I find whenever I have a difficult problem to solve I find myself staring at facebook instead and it is shit. I do some cool stuff on there as well like I made a lot of pictures and things in a faceboook group and annoyed a lot of people which was funny. But I am hoping when I no longer need it to talk to my girlfriend I will basically stop going on there, or just use it about once or twice a week to see what my friends who I no longer see are doing and stuff like that, and of course for annoying people. no other social media / site worries me, I use some for various things, but they aren't exactly important to me. I do really like these forums though, it saddens me when I go on a lot of forums these days, and they are mostly self promoters and wankers

yeah facebook can be awful, but it can be great at the same time because it allows me to get in touch with old friends or in touch with new people i met somewhere but wouldnt otherwise see again.
and yeah I agree that forums like this are good for sharing your work and ideas to other people that you know will 'get' what you're on about kind of thing.

I really think that facebook advertising should be heavily regulated and severely limited by law, its potential as a tool for propaganda simply has no precedent. To make a point by comparison, take tv advertising. For one thing, contrary to what many people think, it is effective however it has the potential to fail to reach it's intended audience for a number of reasons. Now with facebook, because of the wealth of information the company has on literally every person on earth, this is no longer a problem because the ads can be crafted to match any specific individual using well understood principles from psychology. It’s not similar groups being targeted anymore but actual individuals and since there’s constant feedback on what actually works, if a tactic works on someone, they’ll know.
Most people think their beliefs are static and they simply can’t be persuaded but I emphasise that it really doesn’t matter how smart you are, this has not impact on your resilience to covert persuasion. In my opinion, facebook is currently the closest thing to the sci-fi “persuadatron”. With the propaganda you don’t even need to consciously see it for it to work on you. It’s just as effective if it’s viewed and experienced peripherally, that is if you don’t even notice it. Another thing, even If you have adblock enabled, the curation of which posts appear on your timeline, is likely to be some form of this manipulation.
Face-book and it’s use of so called “dark ads” totally undermines what currently constitutes western democracy. If you have enough money to buy constant facebook ads, and you have a few clever social scientists at your disposal you could easily win any election, quite cynically, not needing to care AT ALL what people want or need. I think that Mr truumps recent election victory stands testament to how effective these targeted messages can be. Naturally I try not to use face book, and this isn’t even the only thing I have against it. Also I’ve moved this topic to General, because I think it’s a reasonable topic for discussion rather than just spam.

Don't really use much of the social media, unless it's selling junk on the local classifieds Facebook group, or checking out whats the latest in exploding outrage/current news on Twitter. For the lack of a better word, I've realized some of the design flaws of anonymous imageboards like 4chan and 8chan (among many others). Still love some of the game or music development threads that pop up. Majority of my time sink is the act of web surfing, and having a train of thought, compartmentalized for each group of tabs. First thing you're looking for some documentation, and later on you're posting memes on twitter while playing a podcast in the background and having a conversation with a users on both IRC and Skype. Too many things going on at once.

I was trying to find a link to another study though, where as I remember it, a university in the Uk managed to alter peoples values to either support or oppose authoritarianism by the use of those ads. The experiment I linked to Is worth having a look at though, it’s basically what I’m talking about.

I guess I'm trying to figure out what the end goal for companies like Facebook are. I know Zuck seems to be trying to run for president, but it feels as though if he runs he has so much money that he will just win against any other Democratic or Independent candidate. Also, I'm wondering how much they can alter people's feeling or to what degree? Is it just when their site is being used?

If the way they treat their users is anything to go on, I’d say I wouldn’t want to partake in a new word order as envisioned by facebook, it would be completely shit i recon. they’re really just a glorified advertising platform, well worse I think. You know they actually market themselves to governments as a way to win over voters? and that Zuker he is a slimy little punk. I really hope they go down.
From what I’ve read, the change in peoples attitudes as instigated by a platform such as facebook, It’s a bit of a gradual change it’s not like ZAP! and everyone’s some kind of nazi, I think it works a bit slower than that. I have no doubt though that over the course of a persons lifetime you could change them around completely. With this article I was reading about a facebook manipulation experiment, the researchers polled people in a geographical area before and after running a campaign on them, and they only ran their message in that area. The support for the topic was about 20% initially, then after about a month or 2 of having these messages appear on their facebook timelines (the message was something like an emotional appeal to either get tough on crime, or less tough on crime) their support was up to 50%. so It’s certainly enough to sway the outcome of an election.

I mostly just post on one forum and use Mastodon a little. Killed my Twitter and deactivated my Facebook. Twitter was really cool for meeting local game makerers though Sometimes I like making comments on Youtube And like my videos to exist there with all the other shit. trying to in general be more free and open-sourcey. Really dig the privacy and security of all these new blockchain projects, but really hate the hyper-Capitalism of them
