Since this is somewhat related to the shady way Facebook and many, many companies do their data mining, I was wondering if anybody's checked out some of the OStatus-based social media platforms? I know that most like the GNU Social instances seem to work pretty well (really like the cross-communication between multiple instances), and it's all majority non-profit open source stuff, so it sounds all nice and stuff. Most sites don't really speak of the drawbacks, other than questioning stability of some servers and the off-putting UIs of some.

I've checked them out and they're cool, but of course the usefulness of a social media thing is in who you can talk to with it, and in this case, that is not always many people. Not to downplay the fact that a lot of the major social medias are fiendish , but online services are an area in which I think open source is not as important in my opinion, since you aren't having to run their code on your own computer (beside their javascript), and you can't really prove they are really running the code they claim to be running anyway. I really wish websites these days weren't so damn stupid, their js is unintelligible, and their html is super convoluted, so even what you are running or your computer you usually don't know unless you take precautions like turning off js which would be a massive pain. I think that maybe it would be possible to replace some features of social media like facebook by just having your own website, and maybe having some kinds of social features on there, along with using other apps for communicating. Actually when you are running your own site, then you will know for sure what software you are running on it, so that is a very good thing about open web software, and it obviously also makes that stuff more accessible to people who have some hosting.

There are downsides to 'federation' though. Or this particular kind of federation. You have even less control of anything youit of a buzz word and I'm not conviced post than Twitter. Because it's federated even if you delete of edit (I don't think you can even edit) thee's no guarantee every single instance is going to apply that deletion or edit. I'm realy not convinced of the benfits of federated things like this tbh. I mostly just like that it's open-source and less tolerant of scumbags. Oh and it's great to escape Twitters EULA thing too.

In the US, all it takes is ONE offensive statement at ANY time for companies to refuse to employ you for the sake of their reputation.
