What do numbers like the size of followers in a social media account, account for? Is it a sort of "social economy" where exposure is earned through sub tweeting one-liners? Is a funny meme your social superpower? Or can a virality influence your status how severely?

I wonder if people realise, at any point twitter can just start charging for logging in. I think that’s what their aiming for (although they might capitalise on it differently), creating something that people see as having value and then they can sort of exploit the micro economy they created.
