Farm manager, as a name that sounds like a boring game. Im guessing it would be one of those money earning-profiteering type games, which always makes me wonder. Those games most always give one aspect of farming undue precedence over all others, that is how to make the maximum profit. But I think this is a mistake. What about the well being of the animals, what about the quality of the produce?
How about a farming simulator that shows what profit intensive farming really amounts to, having to cut corners in health and hygiene. ending up with diseased animals and then paying bribes and kickbacks to regulatory organizations/quasi governmental bodies so you don't get caught. I was seriously considering making a battery hen simulator, and I wanted to make it as awful as possible. But I was worried it might glorify or trivialise the actual horror of those living "food factories".

jinx, farm manager simulates crop quality, crop moisture, pests and diseases in the plants, it's not like those facebook casual farming games (btw i'm on a different computer posting this)

also, you can choose if you want to use the manure that your animals produce, fertilizer etc on your plants, you have a very large selection of types of manure in the game and this is the best feature there is

sorr for tripleposting but the game that you thought about making sounds a lot like PETA appellative propaganda

No it doesn't. Farming does a lot of harm to the planet and animals and it'd be cool to have something that acknowledges that instead of the farmer worship that pervades.
Shit aint so black and white that caring about animals means you're a member or some dickhead American animal-rights group.

sorr for tripleposting but the game that you thought about making sounds a lot like PETA appellative propaganda Yeah, well obviously no one likes being preached to. My idea wasn't intended to guilt people into giving up meat, that would be rather didactic, and a bit hypocritical since i'm not even a vegetarian but I thought it might be interesting to explore the phenomenon of intensive farming from say the animals point of view. without putting any spin on it, I think the reality of those places is still objectively disturbing. But i'm open to hearing other opinions.

I'll let it stay here for now, but will move it to game-making section if the discussion will flow that way further.
I like the idea of giving a postponed ethical message in a game like that, it's a good tactic to grab people's attention. Personally I do not support mistreatment of animals at the farms, but I think that big industrial slaughterhouses are even worse in that regard...

Maybe it could involve both city building a farm management. first you come to understand that the game expects you to treat the animals inhumanely to get ideal profits, but later you realise the you need to do the same thing to your humans in order to progress past a certain level of profit. Perhaps then they will relate more with the problem. lol this thread should belong in game design now. it exposes a morbid truth, yes, but I can't help but wonder, does seeing this truth actually motivate people to alter their behavior or does it merely drive them further into denial? I think that on an intuitive level most people are already aware of the underlying problems of our culture, but they feel powerless to change things so they end up, growing apathetic and becoming part of the system. If we could foster a sense of individual power, I think a game that encouraged that would be a game worth building.
