Meet Recca, a shmup that is not exactly well known but those that do know it bow to it's glory. This is by far the craziest, most fast paced, nes game ever made. The game puts the nes to the ABSOLUTE limit at all times during gameplay. Looking at it, I'm surprised this game doesn't cause house fires when you try to play it. The game has enemies and sprites beyond the limit at every point in time. You almost can't even see the character in the madness. The enemies and projectiles move at 100 mph and never stop coming. The music sounds like an nes version of a fucking buckethead solo on an overdrived moog. The visuals take effects that I didn't even know were possible on the nes. The entire background of the second stage is just a loop of a giant, molding, gyrating staticy purple thing. The final boss is one of my favorite parts too because its insane. Imagine if a disordered psychopath blindly put his entire ability and motive to solely kill you as quick as possible, put him in a spaceship and you have the final boss.

It's time to write about one of the games I forgot to mention, Mind Walker. I've never played it myself, but once I saw a footage of the gameplay on NicoNicoDouga. Mind Walker is an Amiga game, where you try to cure the mental illness of a mad professor. You assume different entities - Spriggan, Nymph, Wizard or Human - and travel through the guy's brains in four (or three, depending on how you look at it) distinct stages. First is a kind of 3d platformer where you must draw a "path of coherent thought" in your mind while avoiding and/or destroying 'Bad thoughts' that seem to represent the threat of psychosis. You shoot some rays and navigate through a difficult randomly generated map. Then you find a weird green tube leading 'deeper inside the brain' where you have a brief second stage of finding the door to the depths of your brain, grasping on your last shreds of sanity. Check out the deranged breath noises! Then you must find a shard of your sanity amongst neurons while avoiding bodily electricity impulses. After that, there's a fourth, 'puzzle' stage, where you must complete a whole psychedelically animated picture of your subconscious during a visit to a shrink, who is none other than old Sigmund chap. You must go through the previous three stages again and again until you have enough pieces of sanity to start playing with them and completing the picture - which is difficult, given the way it looks and the presence of animation. You can ask S. Freud to help you, but it takes away your score ('Self-Development Bonus'). His magical pipe puts the pieces back to the place where they belong. All stages except for the second one, are accompanied by equally psychedelic (or should I say psychoactive??) tunes. I like the tune that plays when you finally win the game - it sounds totally cool, I can really picture the recuperation of mind. I figured I might aswell post some of my favorite (all obscure) games, this will be a looong post so be patient! My favorite game of them all is called Fish Fillets and is a difficult puzzle game. You control two fish, assigned to investigate mysterious underwater entities (a crashed UFO, the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis) as they navigate and try to escape every level. There are several cool and unique things about this game. Firstly, the game is very aware of the fact that there is a player playing it and the two fish constantly talk to you, reference the fact that they are in a game, etc. . This creates sort of a cool blend between fake game stuff and reality and really makes you feel like (if it does not break the game rules), anything could happen. There are MANY surprises along the way that will make you (and made me) say "I cant believe they actually did that". But they do! Not only that but every level is unique and has a cool "theme". The music is also fantastic. I think like 6 people beat it in the first year, yes, its one of those games that made themselves very difficult as to prolong enjoyment and gameplay time, but all of it is fair. I should also mention that the game is dubbed in czech (as it is a czech game) but has full english subtitles and the translation is very high quality for the time. My second favorite game is called The Strange and Somewhat Sinister Tale of the House at Desert Bridge. It is an adventure game made in visual basic. You investigate a disappearance of a character called Old Man Bill from the house at Desert Bridge. The description I just gave makes you feel like it is a detective game, but what Desert Bridge really is is a beautifully crafted, exploration-oriented adventure game. Old Man Bill was a sort of inventor, scientist and magician and during the house exploration, you will meet all the occupants and see all the wonderful inventions by him. It also references to itself as not a game but a portal to another world, which is also very nice. The creator made a whole spectrum of games from this universe, which are also absolutely beautiful, but this one is my favorite. My third and last favorite game is also czech and has no translation, rendering it unplayable for most, however, I still think the concept is very interesting so here goes: The game is called Život Není Krásný (translatable as Life is not Beautiful). It was also made in visual basic. It was supposed to be a 14-part series (only 7 were ever finished) of adventure games. Each game had a different premise and goals, but they were all tied together by a central theme of "being the bad guy"- these are some of the most violent games I have ever seen- in each game, you kill several people on the way to your victory. In most iterations of the game, you start out as a low-set, poor guy that lives in the suburbs and was crapped on by life and you have to work yourself up by killing others. All of the games have a different theme and protagonist and completely different plots though (kill your boss for firing you and stealing your girlfriend, beat up a gang terrorizing your city, kill 6 people in 6 days on a bet or your brother will cut off your leg etc.). The creator had all sorts of radical opinions and said that life really is not beautiful and the only way to get anywhere in life is to fuck up others. What I find the most interesting though (and the reason I am talking about it) is the timeline. All of the 14 games were supposed to take place in a specific year (ZNK 1 take place in 2001, ZNK 3 in 1995, ZNK 4 in 1996 etc.) and all of these create a living, breathing world. In ZNK 6, you kill a kid and in 7 find out that he is still being searched for. In ZNK 1 you play as a guy on his way to kill his boss after he fired him and stole his girlfriend but in ZNK 2, which takes place BEFORE ZNK 1, you see protagonist of ZNK 1 in a park bench with his girlfriend. Certain character also escape from fights/are unkillable so you can kill them in a different iteration of the franchise. This all gives it a feeling of consequence, even if all your options are set out. It creates a world where, despite the fact that you are the lovest of low human and nothing you do matters to anyone, your actions actually have consequence and will be felt. Another important factor is that as the games go, they radically increase in quality. ZNK 1 has MS Paint graphics, has barely any sound and is quite short, ZNK 7 is very long, has full music score, voice acting and beautiful graphics. ZNK 4 and ZNK 6 also had RPG elements. The last iteration of the series (ZNK 14) was hyped up as it was supposed to reveal some kind of huge secret about the whole franchise, but it never got past 7, because (you wont believe this), the creator became a famous rapper and never finished his work. I still think these games are very worthy of checking out if you speak czech for many of its feautres, unique concepts and overall bizzareness. I love mind walker and also the other games by Bill Williams. Necromancer is worth checking out. Most of his games are worth having a look at, pioneer plague was kindof boring.
I'd love to play that czech game speedos, pity I don't understand the lingo. KIndof reminds me of Franko the crazy revenge, although that is a Polish game.

Those ZNK games look great, I wonder if it was possible to translate and recreate them in other software. Glad to see people interested in playing these cool games! Me and Sainttimmy were actually looking into translating the games and found out that there IS a way to translate the original files, but it is a bit complicated (you basically have to change every one of the letters individually). By that point, it could actually be easier to just re-write the game in a different game engine like game maker. It being in visual basic creates a lot of bugs on modern systems (ZNK1 and 2 couldnt start up for certain people on Win7, 6 and 7 couldnt be saved on certain computers, 5 wont start at all for me etc). I love these games so I actually would get to work on an english version, just not sure: What would you guys prefer, a translation of the original files or re-creating the game in a new engine?

i know ~half of them because when i had no internet i could only go to shop and buy cd's with indie games from around the web, and damn that was a gooood time! Good ol days Do you still have any? A very neglected hobby of mine is putting shareware CDs on archive.org.

I think translating them and then remaking them in other engine (Twine, Ren'py?) would be a better choice, plus you could make dual-language re-release, both in Czech and English. On the side, I would love to compile a list of cult violent games from each country, it seems each nation has such one title. In Poland it's Franko and Bij Drecha (a terrible, terrible attempt at target shooting game), in Czech it's ZNK it seems, in Finland it's Damage and Tapan Kaikki etc. I wonder what kids in Lithuania or Hungary were swapping on floppies during the school breaks... I also upload forgotten games to archive.org! Recently I've uploaded 4-part series of violent, edgy MUGEN games from long-closed Portugal fighting games forum. Okay, now time to babble about some actual obscure games that I know. Apocalypse Cow is one of those silly shareware MS-DOS games: Battle of the Eras is a fighting game made by some kids using digitized fighters, rendered backgrounds and some really outlandish sci-fi plot. Apparently they sold 0 copies of it, so for many years only the demo release was avaiable, until some years later somebody from Super Fighter Team contacted one of the devs and got the full release. Or maybe an entire re-coding in a programming language (which im aspiring to learn). Just thought I would throw in a little UPDATE for people interested in the ZNK games. If you own an android phone, it might be your lucky day, I still might have the (now taken down) semi-official port of ZNK 1 for android that was translated into english in a USB thats somewhere in my cupboard. When I have the time, I will search for my old USB and upload it!
