It took me so long to realize the solitare eyeball break part was a midi version of the shack and court areas from eathbound.

I've played all 3 games in the Mother trilogy through to the end. They definitely hold a prominent place on my list of appreciated games. The sense of whimsy and humor in them is very nice/distinctive. There's many memorable bits in them, but to choose a few to mention, I really love the part in Eb2 where you go inside the characters mind, That's probably my favorite part of the game, also Moonside is cool which similarly is an area inside the players mind, the bit in EB3 where you go inside a crickets nest was memorable as was the ending of EB2. I read that in Eb3 there was a section where the character was tripping on mushrooms (Tanetane Island) before I had actually played the game, but I was a bit nonplussed when I actually got to that area. I didn't think it was as distinctive as moonside which was basically the same concept, except I think it was done more subtly, dare i say almost Lynchian in style (happening in a moody coffee bar/bar and such). I preferred the ending of Eb 2 over the ending of eb3. I heard some guy on one of the hardcoregaming podcasts (weasel maybe?) talking about the ending of mother 3 and comparing it to something of a religious experience, that caused him to shed tears. While I think that's a pretty cool reaction to a video game, I must report that it didn't have quite same impact on me, but I still appreciated it. Also with EB, I like the villan of the series, as i guess you'd call him(at least from eb2 onwards) Porkey. I think his backstory is interesting. He's really like Mr ttrump, just a spoilt yet emotionally mistreated asshole, still it's nice that the series has some pathos for him (and even for Gigas, as in "Gigas feels the pain"). One thing I don't really like about the series is the grinding, and even the battles (although I admit that they involve alot of tactics and nuance especially in eb3). Im just really not a fan of this type of gameplay, if it was removed i'd appreciate the games all the more. Its funny how quite alot of indi and small commercial games are copying the eb style atm (not that that's such a bad thing), cause the style is seen as "cool" now and has gained wider acceptance. Personally I think they should be ditching the battle mechanics, or at least making the battles piss easy, I mean seriously, who has the time to kill the same "new age retro hippie" 50 times so they can level up?!?? Oh yeah something I just remembered, I liked how you fought basically the KKK in EB2, that was funny, especially in a Nintendo game.

Someone told me about the ending to Mother 3 and it was enough to make me shed tears, and it's not like I'm a wuss. I've only played half of Earthbound until my save got corrupted, and now I can't be bothered to start all over again. I love the series, but from afar you could say.

Dany thanks for offering a counter opinion. Could you elaborate as to why you felt this way? I fear your giving the game more credit than it deserves. Degenerate? Really? Or were you just playing at devils advocate? Macabre, can you please not post blind links. I know I've done it, but new rule, when posting links at least put a description of what your linking to.

danyburton, that opinion is really good stuff. You should stand by it proudly, instead of acting like a coward and recanting.
Anyway, I've managed to preorder a SNES Classic which includes Earthbound among other really neat games. Might start a new playthrough once it arrives.

I haven't even read the post yet. but I'm sure it's at the very least amusing. I sort of like the idea of the snes classic, but I feel a little ripped off that it's just an emulator with some games loaded and a controller. Then again it doesn't make any real difference so who cares I guess

Well I'm still enjoying it anyway. the way I see it atm, the forum is a bit like a stagnant pond, with a lot of decomposing matter soaking up all the oxygen. in time things will balance themselves out naturaly, it just needs more plants.

its funny how all of these indie games try to copy earthbound but they never get it right. the game's atmosphere and surreal charm is unlike any other
